    A curated nightmare of casual conversation \u2013 with a tired smile<\/strong><\/p>

    ME\/CFS brings a lot with it \u2013 exhaustion, pain, dysautonomia... and a whole host of well-meaning but completely misguided comments.
    Here is the \u201cHall of Fame\u201d of phrases we really (really!) can't hear anymore:<\/p>

    \u00a0<\/p>

    1. \u201cWe're all tired sometimes.\u201d<\/strong>
      Oh, I see! I just haven't been getting enough sleep! Why didn't I think of that? Thanks for enlightening me!<\/em><\/li><\/ol>

      \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>

      1. \u201cWell, when I had COVID, it was really just a cold.\u201d<\/strong>
        Great! I've had headaches too. Call me a neurologist from now on.<\/em><\/li><\/ol>

        \u00a0<\/p>

        1. \u201cJust exercise a little more every day.\u201d<\/strong>
          Exactly. I'll start with a half marathon\u2014from my bed to the door.<\/em><\/li><\/ol>

          \u00a0<\/p>

          1. \u201cGet your hormones checked. It can happen at your age.\u201d<\/strong>
            Thanks for the diagnosis: menopause. Always refreshing.<\/li><\/ol>

            \u00a0<\/p>

            1. \u201cBut shouldn't it be getting better by now?\u201d<\/strong>
              Yes. It should. Because illnesses stick to deadlines. Spoiler: they don't.<\/em><\/li><\/ol>

              1. \u201cBut you don't look sick.\u201d<\/strong>
                True. I don't wear my invisible illness on the catwalk.<\/em><\/li><\/ol>

                1. \u201cI know someone who had that too. He's back in great shape now! He didn't have to do anything.\u201d<\/strong>
                  <\/strong> Great. I know someone who won the lottery. Say hi!<\/em><\/li><\/ol>

                  1. \u201cYou can't get so worked up about it.\u201d<\/strong>
                    I'm not getting worked up\u2014I'm lying down. It's basically the opposite.<\/em><\/li><\/ol>

                    \u00a0<\/p>

                    1. \u201cWhat do you do all day?\u201d<\/strong>
                      What do you think? I twiddle my thumbs in various states of energy.<\/em><\/li><\/ol>

                      \u00a0<\/em><\/p>

                      1. \u201cWell, at least you don't have to go to work.\u201d<\/strong>
                        That's right. I voluntarily lie in a darkened room wearing sunglasses and enjoy life. The ceiling looks exciting every day...<\/em><\/li><\/ol>

                        \u00a0<\/em><\/p>

                        And the best part:<\/p>

                        1. \u201cYou just have to want it.\u201d<\/strong>
                          Exactly. I also wanted to slide down a rainbow on a unicorn. Worked out pretty well.<\/em><\/li><\/ol>


                          We know that most people don't mean any harm.
                          But sometimes a simple \u201cI believe you. That sounds really hard\u201d is enough.<\/strong><\/p>
